I am currently in a six month lease from April to October. Does it just switch over to a month to month lease if I do not sign a new one?

Most will and all should send you a notice that your lease is coming up for renewal about 45 days before the renewal date that way you can decide what you are going to do. If you plan to move then it gives you time to get the 30 day move out notice turned in to them.Some places charge more for month to month leases,so they need to know if you are going month to month to make changes to their charges.
